This large Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1870 and displays a French Chateau style with a gold colourway. Constructed from giltwood, gesso, and glass, the piece features an arched frame set upon an ebonized plinth rail, complemented by an ornate ribbon bow crest at the top, acanthus scroll feet at the base, and beaded moulding along the border. The original gold leaf gilding presents a mellow antique appearance, whilst the original mercury silvered mirror plate exhibits a greyish hue, sparkle, and minor foxing to the extreme lower left, accompanied by the original backing board and hanging plates. Measuring 148.5 cm high and 128.5 cm wide, the mirror stands 148.5 cm tall with a maximum base width of 128.5 cm and a main frame width of 112 cm. Positioned above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway, the mirror brings traditional character and reflective light to interior spaces. The substantial proportions make it suitable as a focal point over a fireplace, while the removable ebonized plinth rail offers versatility in placement and styling to suit various domestic settings.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror specifically designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were designed to reflect candlelight and firelight, enhancing the illumination and visual size of grand reception rooms.

Victorian gilt mirrors were typically constructed from a carved wooden core covered in molded gesso plaster detailing. The surface was then finished with micro-thin layers of genuine gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over a painted clay bole base.

Authentic period pieces feature solid pine or oak backing boards, natural age-related oxidisation or slight silvering loss on the glass plate, and visible wear showing the red or yellow clay bole beneath the gilding. Molded gesso ornaments may also exhibit fine hairline cracking due to wood shrinkage over time.

A gilt overmantel mirror can be mounted centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece to create an architectural focal point. Alternatively, it can be leaned against a wall atop a dark wood sideboard or console table to juxtapose classical period ornamentation against modern neutral interiors.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, taking care around delicate gesso details. Never apply water, liquid glass cleaners, or household sprays directly to the gold leaf, as moisture can dissolve water gilding and damage the delicate surface.
