Description

An extraordinary and likely unique arm chair in walnut. Barley twist turnings and sumptuously carved top rail, bottom and intermediate rails, the carving is in high relief and is repeated on the arms., the original finials survive and are well turned. This model of chair which became fashionable in England from about 1660 was almost always caned to the back and seat. This chair has a timber latticework in place of cane, giving a portcullis effect. The back has the addition of scratch carved motifs. The likelihood is that the chair was used with a cushion to the seat.

The seat has had two pieces of timber nailed into the bottom of the chair to strengthen it, this is very historic work, it is likely that the seat failed early in its life, there have been additional strengthening block restorations and the seat is now sound. There is some old worm damage as is expected with walnut from this early period. There is some loss to the toes.

Height 103 cm ( 40 1/2”)

This Charles II period armchair is made from dark brown walnut with a natural timber finish. The construction incorporates barley twist uprights, arms and stretchers, alongside a carved floral cresting rail, acanthus scroll arms, scratch-carved motifs, and original well-turned finials at the top. Instead of traditional caning, both the backrest and seat feature a slatted timber latticework creating a portcullis effect, complemented by a carved bottom rail and intermediate rail in high relief. The structure shows historic strengthening work including timber nailed to the bottom and additional block restorations to secure the seat, alongside old worm damage and some loss to the toes. Measuring 103 cm in height, 57 cm in width, and 42 cm in depth with a 40 cm seat height, the chair is suitable for display or use in a traditional interior, typically paired with a seat cushion for comfort.

Charles II furniture, originating from the English Restoration era between 1660 and 1685, is characterised by elaborate decorative carving, spiral barley-twist turnings, floral scroll motifs, and the widespread adoption of walnut over oak.

Seating from this era was constructed using solid walnut or oak timber, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and frequently featured intricate latticework or hand-woven cane panels for the backrest and seat.

Authentic period armchairs demonstrate hand-carved tool marks, wooden pegged joints, asymmetrical construction details, and uneven footwear across turned stretchers, alongside natural dark patination within carved recesses.

Position the chair as a standalone focal piece against a neutral background, paired with contemporary minimalist lighting and textured natural fibre rugs to accent its carved silhouette.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources, and applying high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
