Early 19th Century Mahogany Dressing Table Mirror

19th century
Description

A very attractive early 19th century mahogany dressing table mirror of elegant proportions, dating to circa 1820. The shield-shaped mirror plate is set within a finely shaped frame, raised on gracefully curved supports with original brass adjustment handles and decorative finials.

The base features a beautifully figured mahogany top above a serpentine front, housing three drawers with turned brass knobs and a central escutcheon. The rich colour and striking grain throughout the mahogany give the piece real warmth and presence.

Raised on shaped bracket feet, the mirror retains a pleasing sense of balance and refinement, typical of the late Georgian period. The mirror plate shows some light foxing, consistent with age, adding to its authentic character.

This early nineteenth-century Georgian dressing table mirror is constructed from mahogany, mirror glass, and brass in a warm brown colour. The shield-shaped plate sits within a shaped frame mounted on curved uprights with brass finials and adjustment handles, and the bowfront base contains three drawers fitted with turned brass knobs and a central escutcheon, all raised on shaped bracket feet. Light foxing appears on the mirror plate, accompanied by a well-patinated surface and minor age-related wear on the timber. Practical dimensions measure 58 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top, dressing table, or chest in a bedroom, hallway, or living room, it complements traditional and contemporary interiors alike.

Toilet mirrors, also known as dressing glasses, gained widespread popularity during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in Britain. Designed to sit atop dressing tables or chests of drawers, they provided a swivel mirror alongside small drawers for housing personal grooming accessories and cosmetics.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using flame mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases. Secondary features often included silvered glass plates, brass brassware such as turn-keys and drawer knobs, and hand-cut dovetail joints within the base drawers.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-sawn wood backings, original brass fittings with light oxidisation, and slight irregularities in the mirror silvering. Look for traditional joinery techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawer linings, alongside natural patination across the timber finish.

A period dressing mirror functions as a focal point when placed atop a contemporary sideboard, bedroom chest, or console table. The warm mahogany tones and architectural shield shape create visual contrast when paired with clean-lined modern decor or neutral plaster walls.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Clean the mirror glass carefully using a soft cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding harsh chemicals or excess moisture near the wooden frame.
