This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1880 in the English Country House style. The frame is constructed from carved wood with a gold gilt finish and retains its original mirror glass plate and backboards. The decorative scheme includes ribbed mouldings on the top rail, fluted pilasters on the sides, rosette motifs at the corners, and carved corbel supports at the base. Visible details include aged distress to the gilt surface and minor oxidation spots on the glass plate. The piece measures 140 cm high, 140 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item serves as a focal point mounted above the mantel in a living room, drawing room, or dining room. It also functions effectively placed over a sideboard or console table in a hallway to reflect natural light and create a sense of scale in the space.

An overmantel mirror is a wide decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised in 18th and 19th-century British homes, these mirrors served to reflect candlelight and hearth light, enhancing the light and architectural proportions of formal reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century overmantel frames were typically constructed from carved timber or pine overlayed with gesso moulding. The surface was finished using gold leaf applied through traditional water gilding or oil gilding techniques, surrounding a silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors show characteristic signs of age, including fine hairline cracking in the gesso surface known as craquelure, natural oxidisation or dark spotting on the mirror glass, hand-joined timber backings, and subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing the underlying red or grey bole clay.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room fireplace, a wide hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard. The warmth of the gilded finish creates a focal point that bridges period architecture with contemporary furnishings.

Maintain a giltwood frame by dusting gently with a soft dry brush or feather duster. Never apply water, liquid glass cleaner, or abrasive chemical polishes directly to the gilt surface, as moisture will dissolve the historic gesso and strip away delicate gold leaf.
