This very large Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1880 in the English Country House style. The frame uses giltwood, glass, and composition materials with a gold finish. The arch-topped mirror features a detailed carved mask cresting at the apex flanked by delicate scrollwork, while the base rests upon ornate scroll feet. Visible signs of age include foxing spots and weathering across the glass plate, alongside subtle surface wear to the gilt finish. The large scale measures 225 cm high by 215 cm wide. In a modern home, this piece hangs on a prominent chimney breast in a living room, dining room, or entrance hall to reflect light and amplify interior space.

Victorian giltwood overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit directly above fireplace mantels during the 19th century, featuring flat bases, arched tops, and wooden or composition frames decorated with applied gold leaf.

These frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood with cast composition mouldings made from chalk, resin, and linseed oil, subsequently finished with water gilding or oil gilding using thin gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut timber backboards, naturally occurring oxidation or foxing on the glass plate, and subtle wear to the gilded surface revealing the red or grey clay bole beneath.

Positioning a large giltwood mirror above a contemporary fireplace or console table creates a focal point that reflects light and balances modern minimalist decor with historic texture.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft brush or feather duster without water, as moisture damages water gilding, and clean the glass separately with a damp lint-free cloth.
