This Georgian wall mirror brings traditional elegance to domestic interiors, executed in the Georgian style with a warm gold leaf finish over giltwood. The rectangular frame showcases a fine beaded moulding along its outer edge, framing a heavily foxed mercury mirror plate that displays natural clouding, dark spots, and characteristic ageing across the glass surface. Metal mounting loops are visible on the exterior side edges of the frame for hanging, complemented by a panelled back construction. Measuring 110 cm high by 73 cm wide with a 3 cm depth, the piece provides a substantial vertical presence suited to traditional living spaces. Hung above a fireplace mantel in a sitting room, or positioned within a hallway, the mirror reflects light while adding period character to wall displays. The piece works effectively alongside other antique furnishings, integrating naturally into period properties or contrasting with modern decor schemes.

Georgian giltwood mirrors were crafted in Great Britain between 1714 and 1830, characterized by hand-carved wooden frames covered in gesso and micro-thin gold leaf. Design profiles ranged from early heavy architectural carving to later refined neoclassical moulding.

The frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, shaped, primed with gesso, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding with genuine gold leaf. The mirror plates were created using a tin and mercury amalgam process on glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing, such as light craquelure in the gesso, gentle wear on high points exposing the red or yellow bole underneath, and mercury glass foxing consisting of dark spots or hazing across the plate.

Positioning a period giltwood mirror above a contemporary sideboard or minimalist fireplace creates a focal point through historical contrast. The gilded finish reflects light and introduces warm metal tones to balanced colour schemes.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or damp cloths that dissolve historic water gilding. The glass should be cleaned carefully using a minimally dampened cloth, avoiding moisture contact with the frame edge.
