This 18th-century Georgian tea caddy displays the traditional English country house aesthetic. Fashioned from satinwood, rosewood, and bone, the box exhibits a honey brown colour with dark contrasting grain and inlay work. The square lidded container has a hinged lid decorated with an inlaid sunburst patera and barber-pole stringing along the edges. The front face shows a dark oval escutcheon insert inset with a white bone keyhole surround, alongside further stringing detail on the vertical corners. The item measures 11 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top, this piece provides a decorative container for small everyday items or tea storage in a living area or dining space.

During the 18th century, tea was a costly import stored under lock and key in wooden boxes known as tea caddies. Craftspeople produced these small containers using fine cabinet-making techniques, including marquetry, veneer work, and fitted internal compartments.

Georgian artisans crafted tea caddies from imported exotic woods such as satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood. These boxes frequently featured fine timber veneers, bone or ivory escutcheons, lead-foil linings to keep moisture out, and brass or iron lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron locks, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and intricate marquetry such as sunburst or shell paterae. The wood develops a distinct warm patina over centuries that modern reproductions cannot match.

A tea caddy works well as a decorative accent on a sideboard, console table, or mantlepiece. Combining warm timber tones with modern ceramics, books, or framed artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the tea caddy in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber veneer from cracking or warping. Dust gently with a dry cotton cloth and apply a light coat of natural beeswax once a year to protect the original finish.
