This Georgian tea caddy is an 18th century Sheraton period object made from satinwood with purple heart crossbanded decoration and marquetry stringing in warm amber and dark purple tones. The square box has a hinged top enclosing a lidded storage compartment, a central brass keyhole escutcheon, and is raised on four original brass ball feet. It measures 14 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. Today, this piece serves as a decorative accessory suited for display on a sideboard top in a living room, dining room, or study, while also functioning as a secure container for small keepsakes or trinkets.

Emerging in late 18th-century Britain, George III tea caddies crafted from satinwood featured refined Neoclassical proportions, detailed marquetry, and crossbanded borders designed to store loose-leaf tea.

Craftsmen utilised imported exotic woods such as satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood, frequently incorporating ebony stringing, brass escutcheon plates, and lead or foil interiors to protect contents against moisture.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-appropriate brass hardware, natural timber patination, and construction methods consistent with late 18th-century cabinetmaking.

Small antique caddies function well as elevated accent objects on sideboards, mantelpieces, or desk surfaces, adding warm timber tones alongside contemporary ceramics and artwork.

Maintain satinwood surfaces by positioning the piece away from direct sunlight and heat, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and applying beeswax sparingly to maintain the original finish.
