Sold 15 September 2025 · French Antique Company

It was listed by French Antique Company. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Large antique French gilt mirror from the early 1800s.

It has its lovely original worn gilt on gesso Louis Philippe frame, showing lots of the red bole that is found underneath all real gilt.

It has its distressed mercury glass which gives a wonderful sparkle and reflection like no other. Mercury glass was not made after 1840.

It has a new back and wire and is ready to be hung.

It would have originally been an overmantel mirror but would look just as good as a leaner mirror (it is large enough) or hung on a large wall.

Date of Manufacture

French Antique Company has dated this French Gilt Mirror to the 19th Century.

French gilded mirrors are characterised by ornate wooden frames coated in gold leaf or gilt gesso, often featuring classical motifs, scrollwork, and elegant proportions developed during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Authentic period pieces typically utilise a carved wooden base, often pine or gesso-covered oak, layered with genuine gold or metal leaf, hand-applied bolus, and traditional mercury or silvered glass plates.

Authentication involves examining the hand-carved joinery, the presence of foxing or oxidisation on the antique glass plate, and the ageing patterns of the underlying gesso and bole beneath the worn gilt surface.

Positioning a large gilded mirror leaning against a living room or bedroom wall creates an impactful focal point, contrasting historical texture cleanly against minimalist modern architecture.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity to prevent wood movement, and cleaning the glass gently with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth without touching the fragile gilt edges.
