Giltwood furniture gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods in Europe, particularly in France, where craftsmen applied thin sheets of gold leaf to carved wooden frames to project wealth and status.

Authentic frames are typically carved from solid hardwoods such as beech or oak, then prepared with layers of gesso and bole before applying gold leaf or water gilding.

Authentication involves examining the hand-carved details for tool marks, checking the composition of the gesso base beneath the gold leaf, and inspecting the joinery and ageing patterns of the timber.

Pairing these ornate pieces with minimalist or modern architectural backdrops creates a striking contrast that highlights their craftsmanship without overwhelming the room.

Giltwood requires protection from direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations; cleaning should be limited to very gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent abrasion of the delicate gold leaf.
