Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual spindles and legs were inserted directly into a solid sculpted wooden seat.

They are traditionally constructed using a combination of timbers, typically featuring a solid elm or fruitwood seat, ash or yew for the bentwood bow and spindles, and beech for the turned legs, joined using mortise and tenon construction.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned components with minor tool irregularities, natural wear patterns on the saddle seat, wedge joints through the seat top, and appropriate timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with age.

An antique Windsor chair functions effectively as an accent piece in contemporary living spaces, providing textural contrast when paired with minimalist dining tables or placed as a standalone reading chair.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish and protect the historic timber finish.
