Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Regency style mirrors, popular in early 19th-century Britain, are characterised by classical neoclassical motifs, heavy use of gilding, architectural elements such as columns and pilasters, and often incorporate influences from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt.

These pieces were typically constructed from pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, hand-gilded with gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques. The mirror glass itself was often hand-silvered and featured bevelled edges or original plate characteristics.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut joinery, oxidisation and foxing on the original mercury or silver-nitrate glass plates, and wear patterns consistent with age on the gilt surface revealing the underlying gesso and bole.

Placing a large giltwood mirror above a contemporary fireplace or console table creates a striking focal point, contrasting historical craftsmanship with clean, modern architectural lines.

Gilded surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid all commercial cleaning agents, moisture, and direct sunlight to prevent degradation of the gold leaf.
