Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency pier glass is a tall, narrow wall mirror originally designed during the early 19th century to mount on the wall spaceknown as a pierbetween windows. These mirrors were created to maximize natural light reflection in formal reception rooms and feature architectural elements like cornices, friezes, and side pilasters.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood frames coated in layers of gesso and finished using water gilding techniques with thin gold leaf. The upper decorative panels often integrated ebonised background paint with carved wood or plaster detailing, housing mercury-silvered glass plates.

Authentic Regency pier mirrors display neoclassical architectural features such as rope-twist side columns, breakfront cornices, and anthemion or acanthus leaf motifs. The reverse typically exhibits hand-sawn pine backing boards, while genuine water gilding shows subtle red or yellow bole clay under areas of surface wear.

Position the mirror above a dining room sideboard, over a fireplace mantelpiece, or in a narrow hallway between architectural openings. Its classical gilt frame provides a structured focal point that introduces warmth to contemporary neutral color schemes and period interiors alike.

Dust the gilded frame using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or damp cloths which dissolve delicate water gilding. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a soft cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner, taking care to prevent moisture from contacting the gilded wooden border.
