French gilt mirrors encompass styles developed primarily during the 17th and 18th centuries under Louis XIV, XV, and XVI, characterised by intricate wood carving covered in fine gold leaf.

These pieces are typically constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or oak, coated in gesso, meticulously hand-gilded with gold leaf, and fitted with historic silvered or mercury glass plates.

Authentic pieces often exhibit subtle dark spots, cloudiness, irregular foxing within the glass plate, and hand-beveled edges, alongside aged gesso shrinkage cracks on the wooden frame.

Placing a large ornate mirror against a neutral wall creates a striking focal point, reflecting natural light and contrasting classical craftsmanship with modern minimalist furnishings.

Dust the gilded surface gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster, avoiding all chemical cleaning agents, water, or abrasive cloths to protect the delicate gold leaf layer.
