Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large 19th Century French Rococo Revival overmantel mirror brings traditional elegance to any interior. The piece is constructed from giltwood, gesso, and glass with a bright gold finish and features an arched frame, beaded trim, gilt moulding, and an ornate carved ribbon cresting at the top. The glass is clear and set within a robust moulded wooden structure showing detailed relief work along the borders and crest. Measuring 158 cm high, 148 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the mirror commands attention while maintaining a flat profile against a surface. It is designed to hang directly above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway to enhance natural light and amplify spatial depth in the home today.

Overmantel mirrors, also known as chimney glasses, gained prominence in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries to reflect light from candles and hearths, becoming central architectural features above fireplace mantels by the 19th century.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak frames covered with compositions of gesso and bole, over which thin sheets of gold leaf were applied and burnished.

Authentic period pieces display natural wear to the gilding revealing reddish or greyish bole beneath, hand-carved wood backing boards, and minor oxidisation or mercury silvering imperfections on the glass surface.

Positioning a period mirror above a fireplace or console table creates a focal point that adds contrast, depth, and warm metallic accents to minimalist or contemporary rooms.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial cleaners which can dissolve water-gilded surfaces or damage the gesso substrate.
