This pair of large Satsuma vases originates from the Meiji period around 1900. Made from earthenware finished with a crackle glaze, the pieces display a maximalist wonderland design vibe with cream and terracotta as the primary colours, complemented by polychrome figure panels in red, yellow, black, blue and gold, alongside moriage enamel, gold leaf, and geometric patterns. Each vessel incorporates raised ring handles on the sides, standing on circular bases. The visible details include ornate hand-painted figurative scenes and raised side hardware. Each vase measures 32 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. These items suit placement on a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or dining space to add traditional Japanese artistry to interior schemes.

Satsuma pottery originated in Satsuma province, Japan, during the late sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its cream-coloured earthenware body, finely crackled glaze, and detailed overglaze enamelling with gilded accents, gaining widespread international recognition during the Meiji period.

Satsuma vessels were crafted from low-fired earthenware glazed with a translucent cream finish that naturally crackled during cooling. Artisans applied polychrome enamels and gold leaf using delicate hand-painting techniques, often incorporating raised enamel decoration known as moriage.

Authentic pieces generally feature dense glaze crackle, balanced gilding, and finely executed figural or geometric decoration. Many authentic works display a maker mark or seal on the base, often incorporating the Shimazu family crest, which resembles a cross within a circle.

A pair of Satsuma vases can be arranged symmetrically atop a dark wood sideboard or marble fireplace mantelpiece to create visual balance. Their muted cream tones and detailed polychrome palette complement both minimalist backdrops and traditional decorative schemes.

Clean Satsuma ceramics using a dry, soft-bristled brush or a microfiber cloth to clear surface dust. Avoid immersing the porous earthenware in water or using abrasive liquid cleaners, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and damage delicate overglaze gilding.
