Pair Of Japanese Satsuma Vases With Arhats, Rich Gilt Decoration, C.1890–1910

A fine and cohesive pair of late-Meiji Satsuma vases from a Kyoto studio, decorated with haloed arhats in raised gilt and polychrome enamels. The surface design features rhythmic rows of Buddhist figures over patterned grounds of clouds and waves. Both pieces demonstrate confident draughtsmanship and the distinctive miniature brushwork typical of export Satsuma from the 1890–1910 period.

Condition
 
One vase is structurally sound with light gilt wear at the mouth. The other has a professionally glued rim crack that can be oriented to the back when displayed. Fine, stable Satsuma craquelure throughout.
