Fine Meiji Satsuma Miniature Vase With Gilt Figural Procession, Late 19th C.

An exceptional miniature Japanese Satsuma vase, late 19th century (Meiji period), of notably high quality and refined finish. The compact baluster body is fitted with a pair of small loop handles and covered in a finely crackled ivory glaze, richly decorated in polychrome enamels and gold.
 
The main frieze depicts a calm figural gathering in a landscaped setting, with seated robed figures arranged in a rhythmic procession around the body. Architectural elements and a distant pavilion are suggested in soft washes, while the robes are picked out with dense gilding and carefully controlled brushwork. The overall effect is elegant and highly decorative, with the detail and balance expected from better Meiji-era Satsuma.
