This pair of antique Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases dates from the Meiji period around 1900. The vases have a rich cobalt blue ground finished with extensive gilt detailing, hand-painted figural panels in landscapes, and intricate floral and scroll borders in green, brown, and white enamel. Each vase stands on a circular gilded base below a shaped rim with a narrow collar and a slender neck, opening out to a rectangular body with canted corners and flat panels. They measure 26.5 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. The pair makes a striking display on a mantelpiece or a side table in a living room or hallway, bringing traditional craft and vibrant colour to an interior shelf or surface.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware pottery originating from Satsuma province, characterised by a distinctive ivory-tinted crackle glaze, intricate hand-painted enamels, and lavish gold gilding, which gained immense international popularity during the Meiji period.

Satsuma ceramics are produced from a dense earthenware body fired at low temperatures, finished with a fine clear glaze that develops micro-crackle patterns, upon which detailed polychrome enamel pigments and heavy gold leaf gilding are applied.

Authentic Meiji Satsuma pieces typically feature fine glaze crazing, detailed polychrome figural or botanical scenes, precise gilding, and often bear maker marks or signatures written in Japanese characters on the base.

A pair of Satsuma vases can be arranged symmetrically on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or console table to add historical interest, rich colour, and detailed patterning to contemporary or traditional interiors.

Dust carefully with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, abrasive detergents, or vigorous rubbing that could remove delicate enamel details or surface gilding.
