Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century and gained widespread international prominence during the Meiji era. Exported extensively to Western markets, these ceramics were celebrated for their elaborate decorative hand painting and distinctive overglaze enamels.

Satsuma ceramics are created from a low-fired earthenware clay body covered in a pale, crackle-glazed ground. Artisans then apply polychrome enamels and raised gilding to form detailed pictorial scenes and intricate geometric borders before a final firing.

Authentic pieces feature a fine ivory-coloured crackle glaze underneath detailed polychrome enamelling and gilding. Inspecting the base often reveals characteristic painter marks, seal signatures, or the Satsuma crest featuring a cross within a circle.

A symmetrical pair of decorative vases creates a balanced focal point when positioned on a mantlepiece, sideboard, or console table. Their rich cobalt blue accents and gold detailing complement dark wood surfaces and classical or eclectic interior settings.
