Antique Japanese Satsuma vase of exceptional studio quality, Meiji period, circa 1895, richly decorated in polychrome enamels and heavy gilding over a deep cobalt-blue ground with a finely crackled ivory glaze. The elegant, slender form rises to a flared rim, giving the vase strong decorative presence as a single focal piece.
The painted scenes are finely executed, with delicately modelled faces, confident brushwork and dense textile patterning, set within a garden landscape with flying birds and sweeping wisteria. Many details are picked out with moriage and raised gilt, adding depth and tactile relief to garments and selected motifs.
The base carries a clear red seal mark reading ?? (“Nanzan”), associated with high-quality late-Meiji Satsuma production.
