A large Japanese Satsuma vase decorated on a deep cobalt-blue ground with reserved panels of courtly figures and garden motifs. The scenes are painted on a pale crackled body, with soft landscape elements that keep the compositions airy. The alternating panels give the vase strong rhythm in the round, turning it into a true display object rather than a single “front” view.
The decorative finish is rich and deliberate. Moriage is used extensively on the kimono patterns, with raised gilt dots and beaded outlines forming textured floral repeats and borders. The same gold pointwork appears as patterned fields, so the garments read like woven textiles. Detail is consistently carried through: faces remain crisp, sleeves and hems are neatly defined, and the gold relief is evenly applied.
An excellent collector’s vase in a large size, combining dramatic cobalt ground, tactile moriage relief, and careful figure painting.
