Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province of southern Japan during the late sixteenth century. The style gained international popularity during the Meiji period, becoming renowned for its light-coloured earthenware body decorated with detailed hand-painted enamels and gold leaf.

Satsuma pieces are crafted from finely processed clay fired at low temperatures to produce a soft earthenware body with a finely crackled ivory glaze. Artisans then apply polychrome enamels and metallic gilding over the glaze before a second firing fixes the decoration.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct cream or beige pottery body with a uniform fine crackle glaze visible beneath the paint layer. Overglaze enamels often exhibit raised texture known as moriage, accompanied by intricate gilding and artist or workshop signatures painted on the base.
