This Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase originates from Kyoto around 1890 during the Meiji period and is attributed to Hayakawa. The baluster body has a cream ivory-toned craquelure glaze decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamels and gold leaf showing a detailed landscape scene with Mount Fuji, pagodas, cherry blossoms, and figures of women and children. The rim is gilded, and a dark geometric band borders the lower section above a stepped foot. The underside bears the Shimazu crest with an overpainted cartouche. The vase rests on a turned dark wood circular stand. It exhibits minor wear to the gilding and slight enamel loss on the neck rim, with no cracks, chips, or restorations. The dimensions are Height 24.5 cm, diameter 13 cm, with a weight of 977 grams excluding the stand. This decorative piece suits display on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or a living room setting.

Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province during the late 16th century, but gained international prominence during the Meiji period (18681912). It is recognised for its cream-coloured earthenware, fine crackle glaze, and intricate hand-painted enamelling often featuring gilded details and detailed figurative or landscape scenes.

Satsuma ware is constructed from low-fired earthenware rather than true porcelain. Artisans apply a clear glaze that develops a characteristic fine network of crackles upon cooling, followed by overglaze enamel painting and gilded decoration applied with delicate brushwork.

Authentic Meiji-period Satsuma items display dense, high-quality enamelling, complex gilding, and fine detail in human expressions or architectural features. Look for maker marks or workshop signatures on the base, often accompanied by the Shimazu family cresta cross within a circle.

These decorative ceramic pieces work effectively as focal accents on dark wood sideboards, mantelpieces, or inside styled display cabinets. Pairing them with minimalist backgrounds or modern neutral palettes allows their intricate polychrome enamels and gilding to stand out.

Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a dry soft-bristled brush to clear dust from crevice areas. Avoid immersing the earthenware in water, using chemical solvents, or scrubbing, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and harsh abrasion can strip delicate gold leaf.
