This pair of 19th-century Japanese Meiji period Satsuma earthenware vases takes a classic baluster shape with a narrow neck, flared mouth, and a flat circular base. Each piece displays a creamy crackle glaze finish completely covered with hand-painted figures in the traditional Hundred Boys pattern, depicting multiple children playing and wrestling in richly detailed multi-coloured robes alongside intricate gold leaf and moriage enamel embellishments. Additional decorative borders line the upper shoulders and lower bases in dark brown, white, and gold geometric patterns. Both vases stand 30 cm high and show no damage or restoration. They are suitable for display on a sideboard top in a living room or hallway setting.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware pottery originating in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century. It gained global prominence during the Meiji period (18681912) as export ceramic ware characterized by cream-coloured crackle glazed bodies decorated with detailed polychrome enamels and gold leaf.

Satsuma pieces are constructed from light-coloured earthenware clay coated in a translucent glaze that develops a distinctive micro-crackle network. Polychrome enamel pigments and gold paint or gold leaf are applied over the glaze to form raised, textured patterns.

Authentic Meiji Satsuma ceramics feature a yellowish-cream earthenware base with a uniform crackle glaze, intricate hand-painted enamelling, and hand-applied gilding. Look for traditional painter or workshop signatures on the underside, often accompanied by the Shimazu family crest, which resembles a cross inside a circle.

A symmetrical pair of Satsuma vases functions effectively as a focal point on a dark wooden sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. Grouping them alongside natural materials, minimalist timber furniture, or neutral backdrops allows the intricate gilding and figurative details to draw visual interest.

Because Satsuma ware is porous earthenware with delicate overglaze enamels and gilding, avoid immersion in water or abrasive chemicals. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean crevices without lifting the gold leaf.
