This 19th-century Victorian overmantel mirror comes in the grand Regency style, constructed from carved wood and gesso with a bright gold finish and complete with its original mirror plate and backboards. The piece has an arched top, a continuous rope twist moulding framing the glass, decorative corner roundels, and plinth base blocks. One observes the visible gilt surface texture and minor edge wear on the frame corners. Standing 133 cm high, 114 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, this substantial architectural mirror positions securely above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway to add light and presence to the interior space.

A 19th-century gilt overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, typically featuring an arched or rectangular top, a wide baseline, and a timber frame coated in gesso and gold leaf detailing.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak sub-frames topped with moulded gesso, hand-carved wood details, layered water gilding or oil gilding, and thick mercury or silvered glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit signs of age such as gentle wear to the gold leaf revealing red or yellow bole beneath, dark spots or foxing on the glass plate, and hand-cut timber backboards.

Positioning an antique gilt mirror above a clean-lined modern fireplace or atop a modern console table creates visual balance, drawing the eye upwards while reflecting ambient light throughout the room.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or liquid polishes, which can dissolve the gesso substrate and strip the delicate gold leaf.
