FAQs

Florentine giltwood mirrors originated in Renaissance Italy, renowned for intricate hand-carved wooden frames coated in thin gold leaf, reaching peak popularity during the Baroque and Revival periods.

These pieces typically feature a hand-carved wooden base, layered with gesso, bole, and gold leaf, often assembled with traditional joinery and secured with hand-forged hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tooled carving details, natural age-related wear to the gold leaf revealing red bole underneath, and older mirror plates with slight oxidisation or foxing.

An antique gilt mirror creates a striking focal point when contrasted against minimalist walls or hung above a contemporary console table, adding textural depth and reflected light.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush, avoiding all liquids, chemical cleaners, and direct sunlight to preserve the delicate gold leaf finish.
