Description

A superb pair of Art Deco satin birch armchairs. We brought these over from Sweden, however, we believe they were made in Finland, and they date from the 1920-30’s period.

The quality is outstanding, they are an impressive size and are very comfortable. The frames are well sprung and sturdy, the backs have lovely little winged sides. The arms and base are beautifully made from satin wood which wraps around the frames nicely.

We have had the wood stripped and re-polished, and these have been fully re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is superb for their age.

Art Deco emerged in France during the 1910s and flourished internationally during the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by sleek geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and the use of luxurious materials.

Art Deco furniture often utilised exotic hardwoods and decorative veneers such as satin birch, macassar ebony, and walnut, paired with high-quality upholstery fabrics like leather, velvet, and heavy woven textiles.

Authentic pieces typically feature period-accurate joinery, distinctive waterfall or streamlined wooden armrests, genuine veneer work, and traditional internal webbing or coil sprung upholstery construction.

These statement seating pieces work well as focal points in a living room, paired with minimalist contemporary furniture or metallic accents to highlight their architectural lines and warm wood tones.

Protect the wooden frames from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer cracking, and regularly vacuum the upholstery using a low-suction attachment to maintain the fabric.
