Description

A French 19th Century Painted Frame Mirror, Original Foxed Mirror Plate 70cm.

A superbly stylish, original 19th century, French hand painted pine frame mirror with giltwood and gesso ribbon decoration and wonderful foxed mirror plate, measuring 70cm tall.

A striking French antique mirror of considerable decorative appeal, featuring a timeworn attraction of beige/green early paint and original foxed mercury glass which adds to its appeal whilst authenticating age.

We estimate the mirror to date around 1860-1880 and likely former part of an internal architectural wall panel, overmantle etc.., we consider the paint to be its original decorative theme and tastefully done, probably from a French petit manoir or chateau.

A very original French antique mirror, structurally excellent with obvious timeworn wear, which adds to its appeal.

A versatile wall mirror for a dayroom, hallway, cloakroom, farmhouse kitchen etc.., or bedrooms, bathrooms and dressing rooms, an interior design piece that can enhance a classic or contemporary space.

Nineteenth-century French mirrors are characterised by hand-applied painted or gilded finishes, often featuring classical motifs and craftsmanship typical of the periods regional workshops.

These frames are typically constructed from solid timber such as pine or hardwood, assembled with traditional joinery, and finished with layered paint, gesso, or gold leaf.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit age-related characteristics such as hand-bevelled or silvered glass with natural foxing, old board backing, and wear patterns consistent with centuries of handling.

An antique mirror adds depth and historical contrast when hung above a modern mantelpiece, console table, or used as a focal point in a minimalist hallway.

Preserve the frame by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Clean the glass gently with a soft cloth and non-ammonia cleaner, taking care not to disturb the original backing or foxing.
