This sweet French wall mirror dates from around 1920 and adopts a French Chateau style. It has a rectangular form measuring 55.5 cm by 75.5 cm and can be hung either landscape or portrait. The piece comprises a wooden structure featuring a gilded inner slip and a painted slate grey outer border. The design includes a linear profile and a dual border surrounding the glass. Additional details visible include the original glass pane and an old backing on the reverse. The dual-tone combination of gold and slate grey offers a classic decorative finish. It is a suitable size for use in a bathroom or as a makeup mirror, and it works well placed above a sideboard in a living space or bedroom.

During the 1920s, French mirror design frequently retained classical moulding profiles while incorporating simple painted borders around gilt inner frames, blending traditional gilded ornament with clean architectural lines.

Authentic French mirrors from this era are constructed from timber frames finished with plaster mouldings, gold leaf gilding, painted borders, and fitted with glass reflective plates.

Authentic pieces feature signs of genuine age, such as slight wear to the gold leaf exposing the underlying clay bole layer, original wooden backing panels, and minor natural patination or foxing on the glass.

Position the mirror centrally above a console table, sideboard, or fireplace mantelpiece to create a balanced focal point that reflects light and adds historical depth to contemporary rooms.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, and avoid liquid cleansers, water, or abrasive polishes that can lift delicate gold leaf.
