This early Victorian Adam style oval wall mirror dates to 1860. The piece is constructed from gilded wood and gesso with a glass plate, finished in a bright gold colour. Ornate decorative elements include a carved ribbon bow crest at the top, a beaded inner border, and delicate floral garland motifs flanking the frame, alongside a scrollwork ornament at the base and a bevelled mirror glass. The frame measures 83 cm wide by 75 cm high. Suitable for period and traditional interior schemes, this wall mirror hangs well above a mantelpiece in a sitting room, or above a console table in a hallway. It brings classical elegance to a dining room or bedroom wall, reflecting light and adding a sense of space to the room.

FAQs

The Adam style emerged in 18th-century Britain under architect Robert Adam, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek and Roman antiquities. Key characteristics include refined Neoclassical proportions, delicate festoons, urns, beaded borders, and ribbon bow cresting.

Frames were typically constructed from carved timber or moulded gesso over wood. The surface was then finished using water gilding or oil gilding techniques with thin leaves of gold applied over a clay bole base.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery, minor imperfections in the silvered glass backing, and genuine water-gilding wear showing red or grey clay bole beneath. Reproductions often exhibit uniform resin mouldings and synthetic metallic paints.

Position the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to establish a classical architectural focal point. The warm metallic gilding balances modern neutral palettes and contrasts effectively with dark wood or painted walls.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled artist brush. Avoid liquid cleaners, spray products, or damp cloths, as moisture dissolves traditional gesso and strips delicate gold leafing.
