Description

A fantastic original antique Victorian mahogany cheval mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around 1860-1880.

This is very well made and is a great size, large enough for use as a full length floor mirror when tilted, but not too imposing. The base has a beautiful sweeping shape, the mahogany has a gorgeous patina with lovely grain patterns.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age with just some small marks and old signs of wear beneath the polish here and there.

Width – 31 inches , 79 cm

Depth – 23 inches , 58 cm

Height – 55 inches , 140 cm

Cheval mirrors originated in France during the late 18th century and gained widespread popularity in Britain throughout the Regency and Victorian eras as full-length dressing mirrors.

These mirrors were traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring hand-turned supports, brass pivot hardware, and mercury-silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved wooden details, heavy secondary timbers, and subtle imperfections in the glass plate consistent with historic manufacturing techniques.

Pairing a rich wood-framed standing mirror with contemporary minimalist surroundings creates a striking focal point, balancing historical character with clean modern lines.

Maintain the timber using quality microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, and clean the glass gently with a soft cloth and mild solution, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that can damage original finishes.
