A Regency gilt convex mirror, often called a bullseye or bankers mirror, is a circular looking glass featuring a curved surface that provides a wide-angle reflection of the room, typically surmounted by a carved eagle or cresting and popular during the early 19th century.

These pieces are traditionally constructed using a carved softwood or gesso-on-wood frame finished with gold leaf or gilt paint, featuring a rebated circular glass plate and often accented with ebonised reeded inner rings and applied spherical balls.

Authenticity is determined by examining the construction of the wooden backboards, the presence of old ghosting or oxidisation within the original convex glass plate, hand-carved gesso details, and signs of age-appropriate wear to the gilt finish.

It functions effectively as a focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or on a dramatic feature wall, where its reflective convex surface bounces natural light and adds architectural depth to the space.

Preservation requires hanging the mirror out of direct sunlight in a climate-controlled environment to protect the fragile gold leaf, dusting gently with a soft dry brush, and avoiding liquid glass cleaners that can seep behind the rebate and damage the foil backing.
