Convex mirrors, often known as butlers mirrors or bullseye mirrors, gained popularity during the Regency and Victorian eras. Historically placed in dining rooms or parlours, their curved glass surface provided servants with a wide-angle view of the room to monitor service needs.

Traditional convex mirrors feature a hand-blown curved glass plate set within a round wooden frame, often carved and finished with gesso and gold leaf. The inner edge frequently incorporates a reeded ebonised slip, and the frame is typically adorned with applied compo ornamentation such as spherules or ball bearings.

Authentic period pieces feature original blown glass containing natural distortions, swirls, and foxing or oxidisation at the silvered backing. The frame construction typically displays historical gesso shrinkage, wear consistent with age, and traditional hand-cut joinery rather than modern fasteners.

A convex mirror works effectively as a focal point in a living room, hallway, or above a fireplace. Its reflective quality bounces light around the space and creates a fish-eye perspective that pairs well with both contemporary minimalist decor and traditional period settings.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid spraying cleaning products directly onto the glass or gilt surface, as moisture can seep behind the silvering. Use a lightly dampened microfibre cloth only when necessary, taking care to protect fragile antique finishes.
