Early 19th Century Regency Circular Convex Giltwood Mirror with Eagle Surmount

19th century
Description

A fine early 19th century Regency period circular convex mirror, dating to circa 1820–1830.

The mirror is set within a giltwood frame with a moulded surround and ebonised slip, retaining its original convex plate which provides a wonderfully atmospheric reflection. The frame is surmounted by a well-carved and expressive spread-wing eagle perched upon a rocky outcrop, a classic motif of the Regency period symbolising strength and vigilance.

The lower section is decorated with carved scrolling acanthus ornament, balancing the composition and enhancing its decorative appeal.

The surface retains a good mellow gilt finish with some natural wear and patina consistent with age, adding to its authenticity and charm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency convex mirrors were popularised in Britain during the early 1800s, featuring curved glass lenses set within spherical giltwood frames often crowned with decorative crestings like eagles or foliate carving.

These frames were constructed from carved timber coated in gesso and finished with water or oil gilding using gold leaf, alongside an ebonised reeded inner slip and a hand-blown convex glass plate.

Original pieces feature hand-carved wood elements rather than molded plaster, evidence of dark gesso or grey bole under worn gilded surfaces, a dark ebonised inner slip, and age-related oxidisation on the convex glass.

Position the mirror above a chimney breast, mantelpiece, or sideboard to create a focal point that bounces light and reflects a wide-angle view of the room.

Dust the gilded wood frame gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush while avoiding moisture, and clean the glass with a slightly dampened cloth without touching the water-gilded frame edge.
