FAQs

The Regency style spans the early 19th century, heavily influenced by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, characterised by symmetry, restrained ornamentation, and architectural proportions.

These pieces typically feature carved softwoods or composition ornament applied to a wooden base, finished with gold leaf or metallic paint over a preparation layer of gesso.

Authentication relies on examining the construction joints, the presence of hand-carved details versus moulded composition, the ageing of the gesso, and the characteristics of the mirror plate, such as historical silvering faults or distortion.

They provide a reflective focal point and metallic warmth when hung against painted walls, serving to bounce light around the room and contrast clean modern lines with classical texture.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush; moisture, chemical cleaners, and abrasive cloths must be avoided to prevent stripping the gold leaf.
