Cheval mirrors originated in France during the late 18th century, with the word cheval deriving from the French for horse, likely due to the four-legged frame design resembling a horses stance.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring hand-turned supports, brass adjustment knobs, and mercury-silvered glass plates in earlier periods.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joinery, old secondary woods on the back panels, subtle imperfections in the glass, and period-appropriate hardware like brass pivot screws and castors.

Position the piece against a neutral wall in a bedroom or dressing room to allow the rich timber tones to act as a focal point, pairing it with minimalist surrounding decor to balance the historical weight.

Maintain the timber using a microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, and clean the glass using a lint-free cloth with a mild vinegar solution, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that can damage old finishes.
