Description

A very near pair of late 19th century English Victorian mahogany buttoned spoon back armchairs, circa 1880.

The chairs are so similar, there being a slightly different foot and one frame is just slightly broader than the other…noticeable when placed directly alongside like this in the photos, but when apart, you won’t notice!

Well carved solid mahogany frames and their vintage upholstery is in good condition, very comfortable too.

Can be reupholstered for you in your own choice of fabric, please get in touch to discuss costs and meterage.

Priced as the set of two.

Spoon back chairs feature an oval or rounded backrest with a concave shape that resembles the bowl of a spoon, specifically designed to fit the contours of the human spine. Popular during the Victorian era, this design prioritised ergonomic comfort alongside ornate wooden framing.

These frames were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, showcasing hand-carved detailing. Upholstery traditionally utilised horsehair stuffing, coil springs, and durable textiles like wool, silk, or velvet.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved woodwork with minor natural imperfections, and traditional upholstery methods such as hand-tied coil springs and horsehair padding. Look for age-related patination on the wooden frames and wear patterns consistent with historical use.

Pairing these curvaceous historical seats with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a striking contrast that highlights their craftsmanship. They work effectively as focal points in a living room, study, or bedroom when balanced with neutral modern textiles and clean architectural lines.

Protect the wooden frame from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations to prevent timber cracking or fading. Velvet upholstery should be gently brushed with the grain using a soft-bristle brush and vacuumed with a low-suction attachment, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
