Antique Victorian High Back Armchair Green Upholstery C.1890

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and elegant late 19th century high back armchair, dating from approximately 1880–1900 and displaying strong French Louis Philippe influences.

The chair features a wonderfully tall, gently shaped upholstered back enclosed within an elegant moulded wooden frame. Its sweeping open arms terminate in distinctive scroll-shaped ends and flow down into beautifully curved front supports and legs.

The chair is upholstered in a muted sage/olive green fabric, complemented by traditional decorative studding around the backrest, seat and upholstered arm pads. The understated green upholstery works particularly well against the warm tones and naturally aged patina of the wooden frame.

With its unusually tall back and generous proportions, this is a particularly striking statement chair. It would work beautifully as an occasional or fireside chair in a living room, bedroom, library or period interior.

Seat Height: 39 cm

Presented in very good antique condition, with attractive age related patina and expected signs of previous use. There are minor marks, rubbing and surface wear to the wooden frame, together with some age related wear and variation to the upholstery.

Victorian high back armchairs, popular during the late 19th century, feature tall backrests designed for support and draught protection, often incorporating moulded timber frames and upholstered pads.

These chairs typically feature carved hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, combined with coil springs, horsehair padding, brass studding, and rich velvet or wool upholstery.

Authentic late Victorian armchairs feature hand-joined timber framing, original brass castors or turned feet, hand-tacked upholstery trimmings, and subtle hand-carved decorative accents along the frame.

Position the chair as a singular accent piece in a modern living room or reading corner, pairing its curved silhouette and olive green tones with neutral walls, contemporary lighting, and minimalist side tables.

Vacuum the upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment, avoid direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and nourish the exposed timber frame periodically with a natural beeswax polish.
