FAQs

A full-height floor dressing mirror is a tall, free-standing or leaning mirror designed to reflect a complete view of a person. Popularised in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors served functional roles in dressing rooms and decorative functions by amplifying light within grand interiors.

Traditional floor mirrors were typically constructed from solid hardwoods or pine frames, coated with gesso and paint finishes. The mirror glass itself was frequently hand-blown or mercury-backed, creating subtle visual variations distinct from modern float glass.

Authentic antique mirrors often exhibit unevenness or oxidation on the reflective backing, known as foxing. Examining the frame timber joinery, such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, as well as checking for original timber backing panels, helps confirm historical period.

Positioning a painted floor mirror leaning against a neutral wall creates a focal point and enhances natural light in a hallway or bedroom. Pairing dark frames with minimalist, light-toned surrounding decor provides contrast while preserving a classic aesthetic.

Clean the mirror glass using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding contact with the painted frame. Clean the painted timber frame using a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without stripping the historic painted surface.
