Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Wide rough-sawn pine backboards: cabinet work from before machine circular sawing.
Hand-wrought iron straps across the cresting: period structural support for pierced timber.
Three separate mirror plates: reflects early limits on glass casting sizes.
Heavy wear revealing the white gesso ground: centuries of dusting and handling.
Clouding and dark spotting across the silvering: natural oxidisation of early glass.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This George II overmantel mirror is an 18th-century English country house piece constructed from giltwood and glass with a gold finish. The tripartite three-plate design includes an ogee-arched configuration and a prominent scrolled cresting decorated with carved acanthus leaves and gilded moulding. Visible signs of age include worn gilding and gesso across the frame, intact backing boards, and a broken mirror glass pane on the right-hand side that shows visible cracks. The item measures 60 cm high, 149.5 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Position this rectangular mirror above a fireplace mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The traditional overmantel format suits placement over a mantelpiece, reflecting light into the surrounding interior space while serving as a decorative wall fixture.

FAQs

A George II chimney piece mirror is a horizontal wall-mounted mirror produced during the reign of King George II (17271760). Designed specifically to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, these mirrors served as focal points in reception rooms and feature ornate carved giltwood frames influenced by early Georgian and Rococo tastes.

Frames from this era were typically carved from softwoods like pine or lime, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding with fine gold leaf. Because manufacturing large sheets of flat glass was technically challenging and costly, makers frequently employed a tripartite structure with three separate mirror plates joined within a single frame.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, visible wood grain or shrinkage under the gesso, and natural wear or bole showing through the gilded surface. The glass plates often show subtle distortion, grey or dark spots from mercury amalgams, and hand-cut bevels or joins rather than modern silvering.

Positioning a gilded overmantel mirror above a fireplace or a low sideboard draws the eye upward and reflects natural light across the room. The warm metallic tones of the aged gilding provide textual contrast when paired alongside neutral plaster walls, modern art, or contemporary minimalism.

Dust the carved frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting loose gold leaf, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that degrade gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a lightly damp microfiber cloth, keeping moisture away from the frame edge to protect the gilding.
