Important Antique Circa 1820 Thomas Chippendale Hand Carved Wingback Armchair

19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very rare and highly collectable, early 19th century circa 1820-1840, hand carved wingback armchair with Thomas Chippendale, fretwork carved legs

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote, please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

A very important piece, possibly made in the workshops of Chippendale or by a former employee, the quality of the carving to the legs is hard to believe, there looks to be an ornately turned leg encased inside the fretwork carved external shell which makes up to form a very beautiful finished article, this was designed by Chippendale and is known as Chinese Chippendale

This chair is in fine order throughout, the upholstery is free from marks, the cushion is feather filled and very comfortable

The timber has been waxed and polished, it has a lovely vintage worn patina all over that you can only achieve through honest age and fair use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A wingback chair, or fireside chair, features high side panels originally designed to shield the occupant from cold draughts and retain heat from a hearth. Chippendale style variations typically feature carved timber legs, straight or cabriole supports, and intricate fretwork decoration.

These chairs were built using solid hardwood frames, most commonly mahogany or oak, secured with mortise and tenon joinery. Internal cushioning traditionally comprised horsehair padding, steel coil springs, and jute webbing upholstered in woven damask, wool, or velvet fabrics.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-carved decorative motifs on exposed wooden elements, such as blind fretwork or acanthus leaves. Inspecting the framework underside reveals hand-sawn timber, wooden dowels, hand-forged tacks, and natural wood oxidation.

Positioning a wingback armchair alongside a contemporary side table and floor lamp creates a functional reading area. Combining traditional patterned upholstery with neutral walls balances classical form with modern interior schemes.

Vacuum fabric upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment to remove dust accumulation without abrading fibres. Keep exposed carved wooden components away from direct heat sources and apply clear beeswax sparingly to preserve the timber finish.
