This late Regency period metamorphic library chair in the manner of Morgan and Sanders functions as a chair and converts into library steps. Made from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour, it has a panelled top rail, scrolling arms with brass inset strengtheners, and swept front legs with brass square cup castors. The seat has a brown buttoned leather cushion, and the framework incorporates reeded details. The piece measures 84 cm high, 53.5 cm wide, and 84 cm deep. Designed for a gentleman's library or study, this piece provides seating alongside steps to reach high bookshelves. It works well positioned by a bookcase, desk, or reading table in a traditional study, home office, or living room.

A metamorphic library chair is a dual-purpose piece of mechanical furniture designed in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries that transforms from an armchair into a set of library steps.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, incorporating brass hinges, iron locking mechanisms, and leather-upholstered seating panels.

Authentic Regency examples typically feature reeded frame details, scroll arm supports, brass castors, and original hinged mechanisms that allow the top frame to fold over smoothly.

Place the piece beside floor-to-ceiling book shelving in a dedicated study or reading alcove, pairing rich wood tones with structured modern brass lighting and understated decor.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent joint movement, apply beeswax periodically to preserve the patina, and lubricate internal mechanical hinges sparingly.
