FAQs

Victorian dining chairs are characterised by ornate carvings, curved silhouettes, and stylistic revivals drawing from Gothic, Rococo, and Elizabethan eras, reflecting the industrial manufacturing advancements and stylistic shifts of the 19th century.

These chairs are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, and traditionally upholstered seats using horsehair or modern equivalents beneath fabric coverings.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails or pegged joints, timber oxidisation, tool marks, and wear patterns consistent with nineteenth-century hand-finishing techniques.

Pairing antique wooden chairs with a contemporary or minimalist dining table creates a striking juxtaposition, blending historical craftsmanship with clean, modern architectural lines.

Maintain antique wooden chairs by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and clean the wood periodically with microfibre cloths and high-quality beeswax.
