This set of four Victorian dining chairs dates from 1860 and takes the form of balloon back chairs made from solid walnut with a rich brown finish and a carved crest rail. Each chair has an open balloon back with a carved centre splat, reupholstered seats in a cream and gold patterned fabric with vertical wavy lines, and stands on turned reeded tapering front legs with round carved details and outswept back legs. The chairs measure 87 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. These chairs suit placement around a dining table in an English Country House style interior or as occasional seating in a living room or study. The durable construction and traditional design provide reliable seating for everyday use while maintaining a formal period aesthetic.

Balloon back chairs originated in the 1830s and feature an open, rounded backrest resembling a hot air balloon. They often display hand-carved horizontal splats, smooth cresting rails, and turned or cabriole legs.

Victorian cabinetmakers primarily used dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. These timbers offered structural stability for detailed carving and polished to a rich depth of colour.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-carved joinery marks, natural patination beneath the seat frames, and turned front legs with plain, slightly splayed rear legs. Hardware such as original screws or brass castors also helps confirm age.

These dark wood frames contrast well with modern pale oak or glass dining tables. Reupholstering the seat pads in contemporary neutral or geometric fabrics helps bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist spaces.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply beeswax once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Keep the chairs away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading.
