FAQs

Nineteenth-century gilded mirrors frequently feature elaborate wooden frames coated in thin layers of gold leaf over a prepared gesso and bole ground, reflecting the neoclassical and revivalist tastes of the period.

Traditional construction typically involved a pine or hardwood structural frame, layered with gesso and red or yellow bole, finished with genuine gold leaf, and paired with hand-silvered or mercury-silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the aged patina of the gold leaf, hand-carved or reeded wooden joinery, oxidisation spots or foxing on the original glass plate, and period-appropriate backing boards and fixings.

An antique mirror adds historic contrast when hung opposite a modern light source to maximise luminosity, or positioned above a minimalist console table to anchor a room with textural depth.

Gilded surfaces should be dusted extremely gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding all commercial cleaning solutions, water, and abrasives to prevent permanent damage to the delicate gold leaf layer.
