An overmantel mirror is a large mirror specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace. They gained widespread popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as rooms became better lit and interior designers sought to amplify natural light and create a sense of spaciousness.

Traditional mirrors from the early 20th century typically feature a hand-carved wooden or composition (compo) frame built over a sturdy pine carcass, finished with layers of gesso and gold leaf or metallic paint. The glass was often hand-silvered, resulting in subtle imperfections and a softer reflection compared to modern float glass.

Authentic period mirrors often exhibit age-related characteristics such as foxing or silver oxidation on the mirror plate, hand-cut joinery in the wooden frame, and period-appropriate fixings on the reverse. Additionally, composition ornamentation on older pieces tends to show shrinkage cracks and minor wear consistent with decades of oxidation.

A large gilded mirror adds a focal point of classical proportion and warmth to a contemporary space, effectively balancing minimalist furniture with textural contrast. It can be mounted securely above a fireplace or leaned casually against a living room wall to bounce light around the room.

Antique gilded surfaces are extremely delicate and sensitive to moisture, so they should only be dusted gently using a dry, soft ostrich feather duster or a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid using any liquid cleaners, chemical sprays, or abrasive cloths, as these can strip the gold leaf or damage the underlying gesso.
