Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French cushion mirror, also known as a marginal mirror, features a central pane surrounded by angled secondary glass panels set within a carved frame. Originating in the seventeenth century and remaining prominent through the nineteenth century, this design reflects additional light and creates a layered dimensional effect.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved softwood frames layered with gesso, a plaster-like compound used to model relief details. The decorative elements were then finished with leaf gilding, distress-painted glazes, and silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, natural foxing or oxidisation on the silvering of the secondary mirror panels, and subtle wear through the gesso layer showing underlying bole beneath the gilding.

Position a cushion mirror above a sideboard or mantelpiece to create an architectural focal point that maximises ambient light. The contrast between detailed gilt embellishments and modern minimalist furniture adds textural depth to contemporary spaces.

Dust the carved frame gently with a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions that dissolve original gesso and gilding. Clean the mirror glass carefully using a soft cloth lightly dampened with water, ensuring liquid does not contact the frame seams.
