This nineteenth-century French Louis Philippe wall mirror brings classic elegance to an interior. The piece is constructed from giltwood, gesso, and glass with a bright gold finish and a reflective mirror plate. The decorative frame displays a distinct ripple moulding profile, linear incised details, and rounded upper corners forming a D-shaped top. Visible signs of age include light surface wear, gentle distressing, and subtle antiquing across the gilded surface. Measuring 133 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, the mirror has a substantial scale suitable for hanging in a living room, hallway, or above the mantel. It functions as a decorative wall hanging that reflects light and enhances the sense of space in a traditional or transitional home setting.

FAQs

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe from 1830 to 1848, these mirrors are defined by rectangular frames with characteristic rounded top corners, flat bottom corners, and restrained gilt mouldings.

Traditional frames were constructed from carved softwood, built up with gesso plaster, and finished using water gilding with fine gold leaf over a red clay bole base.

Authentic period examples feature original pine backing boards, square bottom corners paired with rounded top corners, and natural wear showing red bole beneath the gilding.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece, layer it over a hall console table, or mount it in a dining space to introduce reflective depth against contemporary walls.

Dust gently using a dry, soft brush or feather duster; avoid applying water or chemical spray cleaners, as moisture breaks down water-gilded gesso surfaces.
