This nineteenth-century wall mirror follows the Rococo style with a French Chateau design vibe. The piece has a warm gold colour across its giltwood and gesso surfaces, paired with a glass mirror plate. The rectangular frame exhibits a cushion moulding, intricate openwork scrollwork, acanthus leaf carving, and a crested pediment at the top. The frame shows visible hand-carved textures and an aged gilded finish with subtle patina variations. Measuring 140 cm high, 98 cm wide, and 10 cm deep, the mirror hangs securely on a wall. It is suited for placement above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or bedroom.

FAQs

A cushion framed mirror features a raised central moulding surrounded by a secondary border, often decorated with intricate giltwood carving and pierced foliage popularised during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

They typically feature carved timber frames coated in layers of gesso, finished with hand-applied gold leaf over red or yellow bole, housing hand-cut mirror glass.

Look for subtle wear revealing the underlying gesso or red bole, evidence of hand-carving on the reverse frame, and light foxing or oxidisation across the glass plate.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece or hallway console table to reflect natural light and create a dramatic focal point against neutral or dark wall finishes.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, strictly avoiding water, chemical polishes, or damp cloths which can dissolve gesso and lift gold leaf.
